Celebration: Acts of Kindness

So, let’s get the big questions over with quickly:

Still on strike? Yes. (23 days on the picket line now . . . )

Still sane? Debatable.

Still celebrating? Indeed. When I can’t do this, it is really bad.

This week I celebrate the small and big acts of kindness that have helped me get through, helped me smile and helped me feel gratitude to the wonderful people in my life – some friends and some strangers.

In no particular order (and I am sure I have missed a few), here are the kind gestures that I treasured this week.

Celebration: Acts of Kindness There's a Book for that

  • A very dear friend took me for lunch at her son’s restaurant. Delicious food, impeccable service and a lovely few hours of conversation and connecting.
  • My husband gets up every morning and makes me strong coffee, even on the days when my morning starts much earlier than his.
  • Another teacher that I actually first met on twitter has been sharing some wonderful insight and optimism with me this week. I even have permission to call her at 4 a.m. if I can’t sleep with worry over all of this and she will “talk me through” it. Wow.
  • I get almost daily Luna kisses from this beautiful dog (pictured above) as she is out for her daily walk past our school/picket line. Isn’t she gorgeous? I appreciate that her owners always say goodbye with some variation of this, “Well, nice to see you but hope we don’t see you again.” While it is wonderful to connect with new people (and animals), these circumstances are far from ideal.
  • I have another favourite visitor that walks by and stops for a visit everyday. This one is of the little person variety and is usually accompanied by Mom or Dad and adorable baby brother. We talk books, brothers and various other things. She arrived one day in a gorgeous outfit (from India I think) that her Dad had bought for her. I commented that she looked much more amazing than me and that I would love a similar outfit in my size. The next day she looked me up and down and said, “I think today that you look much better than I do.” I have carried this wonderfully genuine compliment with me all week!
  • I am especially grateful to one man who walked by with his dog and at our request “stayed near” for an extra 5 minutes. It was yesterday on the picket line early in the morning. Nobody was around and our line consisted of three women. We asked for this “support” because behind him we spotted a gentleman walking down the sidewalk who had made some nasty comments to us back in June. While he stayed with his dog and talked, the man walked right by. Unfortunately, after he left, the “unpleasant” man returned. We had to endure an ugly three minutes or so of verbal aggression and physical intimidation. It was bad. But, our “people” rallied around us and now we will have a male teacher on the early morning shift next week (if we are still out . . . ) In all of this, the kindness of strangers shone above the cruelty of one.

Celebration: Voice

I think if you arrive at my blog on a Celebration Saturday and I am sharing news that the strike has ended and I am back in my classroom, you will have to close your eyes and plug your ears. Somehow, I will have figured out how to install a brass band and fireworks exploding everywhere as soon as you click on the link.

But today, is obviously not that day. Monday, I will be on a picket line for the eighteenth day since May of this year (rotating strike days with full scale walk out beginning mid June) and have sat through two study session days organized by my union, which confirmed, if I hadn’t figured it out that we are really truly on strike.

There are weeks where I shed a few tears trying to dig deep and find something to celebrate.

But. Breathing deep, here I go. I still have the power to find things despite my sadness.

 Celebrate: Voice

This week, I celebrate voice. There is so much feeling out of control in prolonged job actions. This week, I was invited into the CBC studios a few times to talk about how low income children are faring during this strike. I am very concerned about my students and their well being. It felt many shades of right to be able to talk about it. I am grateful to both CBC television and CBC radio for sharing this aspect to the strike that many might not be thinking about. The impact on children, especially those most vulnerable, matters.

I do have the clip to the radio segment. If you want to listen, the link is here.

Celebration: Inhale, exhale. Repeat.

If you are a teacher in B.C. right now, you can’t think. Coherence is next to impossible. Logic? Out the window. Just breathing and moving at the same time? Quite remarkable. As I type, both parties involved in the BC Education dispute are holed up with experienced (thank goodness times a thousand) mediator Vince Ready trying to get a negotiated settlement. Which would mean we might actually make it back to school in the month of September. After months of striking, it is more than time. I am not so good at sitting by while huge discussions are happening that impact my life, my children’s lives and the lives of each my students and their families. But sit by, I must.

And the best I can do, is make a list. List making is like one foot in front of the next. One, two, three, four . . . So here we go . . . While everything hangs in the balance and I can barely breathe, I am going to make a list that allows me to slow down and celebrate. Inhale, exhale, here we go.

Right now, I celebrate how very much I love my job. How being a teacher brings me joy. How lucky I am to be part of a classroom community. Let me be back here soon!

I celebrate . . .

Celebration: Island moments

A week ago we returned from a vacation with family on Protection Island here in B.C. A week away was full of many small moments to appreciate. Time with family. Slowing everything down.

Books. Berry Picking. Ocean Gazing. Perspective taking.

I share some moments here – each full of so much to celebrate.

Community gardens and the beauty and complexity of nature.

Celebration: A list

I tried to draft a celebration post numerous times yesterday. In fact, I had a post all ready to go this a.m. but I woke up and deleted it. Sometimes, things just don’t feel right.

But celebrations are important. So, I made a list of ten things that made me happy this week. The first things to enter my head. List making is soothing. Gratitude is huge.

Celebration: A list There's a Book for That

1. Strong coffee

2. Reading a pile of picture books at 6 a.m. when everyone else is asleep. Then, sitting back and feeling like a whole day of emotions has already been lived.

3. Smoothie inventing

4. Hawk sounds. They are nesting in nearby trees and their cry is beautiful.

5. Family birthdays

6. Evening games of Blokus

7. Laundry on the line

8. Sitting under a tree with my daughter. Reading books. People watching.

9. Soccer camp for my son. Boys and soccer: bright cleats, long shorts, big smiles.

10. Smiling at strangers in busy neighbourhoods. Smiles back.

I hope that all of your weeks were full of small moments to celebrate.

Celebration: The Forest

I know that so many people check the weather and rejoice when it is going to be a fully sunny day. Especially here in the Pacific Northwest where we have many days that are fully rain! I love summer mornings when the sun is beginning to rise in the sky. By the afternoon, I am wishing for the cool evenings. I don’t mind a little cloud. A rainy day thrown in every few days for good measure. Too much sun is just too much hot. For me.

Lately, we have been having day after day of sunny, hot days. Two days this week, we headed to the forest. On day with friends. We hiked. We played by the river. We had a picnic in the shade by a lake.

I celebrate the forest and its intense green. The full sweet air. The noise of birdsong. I am grateful for the chance to walk straight up a steep hill and not feel like melting. I am charmed by the trees that call, “Look up!” In the forest, there is time to dream. To feel part of something big and quietly powerful. For the chance to stand and stare and almost feel like growth is happening right there in front of us. To lose count of the many shades of green.

I invite you to come walking with me . . .

If anyone is interested,  here is an article in a local paper about the area where we were hiking. It is in North Vancouver in the Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve – about a 30 minute drive from us.

Wishing everyone beautiful summer days – with your own “best dose” of sun!

I didn’t get to share a celebration post last week because we were away on a family holiday. It was time with Grandparents, Aunties, Uncles and cousins. Walks and sorbet cones. Chasing each other around the lake. Leaping into the pool. Reading for hours.

I celebrate these seven scenes of summer and all of the memories that each of them hold.

Happening upon little critters we don’t see in our area. In Vancouver it is all about the grey squirrel (and we aren’t exactly fans . . . ). But cute little chipmunks are worth stopping to quietly watch.

Exploring with cousins. There are six kids all born within 38 months of each other. They loved running ahead of parents as we went walking both near and far from where we were staying. These next two pictures are taken at the Othello tunnels near Hope, B.C.

As many of you know, B.C. teacher’s have been in some stage of job action for months and were out of our classrooms (full scale strike) for 13 days in June. We still don’t know about our return in the fall. It is hard to carry on as if all is normal, when nothing is normal. My life is not just my job but teaching is a huge part of my life. I am passionate about what I do and I miss it.

This week, I have worked really hard to reclaim a part of who I am – a reading teacher who shares a love of books with my students but also an amazing online community of book inspired colleagues. I have been reading and blogging and sharing and it is this I celebrate. I may not have a definite time when I will be sharing the magic of books in my classroom again. But I am sharing it here everyday and learning and being inspired by a community that shares with me. This has given me new energy and joy.

I celebrate the #booklove my blog allows me to share.

This week I blogged every day.

On Monday, I shared my reading from the week in my It’s Monday, What are you reading? post It was a big picture book reading week for me and I shared lots of treasures. I love learning from the book lists and reviews of the #IMWAYR community. It is a guaranteed day to add to my library requests, my Pinterest boards and my ever growing TBR list on Goodreads. These are readers who know their books. I never have to worry about what to read next!

Emily's Blue Period Celebration: Book blogging There's a Book for That

On Tuesday, I shared a picture book wish list – ten titles that I would love to own. Book buying may be on hold until there is an income coming into our household again (two teacher family) but making lists is free. And dreaming in picture books is quite wonderful!

Celebration: Book blogging There's a Book for That

On Wednesday, I shared this book about moon bears and a number of other nonfiction titles about bears for my Nonfiction Picture Book Wednesday post. Alyson Beecher from Kid Lit Frenzy hosts a nonfiction picture book challenge and invites bloggers to share their nonfiction reading each Wednesday. In sharing some of my favourite nonfiction titles of 2013 in January, I shared how participating in this challenge has transformed my teaching. I am pleased to report that I have already surpassed my goal of reading 65 new to me titles. Currently, I have read 80 nonfiction picture books in 2014 🙂

Jasper's Story Celebration: Book blogging There's a Book for That

On Thursday, I had the pleasure of participating in a blog tour to celebrate the Tenth Anniversary of The Schneider Family Book Award. My post, written with my eleven year old daughter, featured a 2013 winner A Dog Called Homeless by Sarah Lean. Thank you to Alyson Beecher for asking me to participate in this. It was an honour and an absolute pleasure to help highlight the importance of this award. We all benefit from reading and sharing more diverse literature and titles that highlight the disability experience are an absolute part of this.  This tour and giveaway are running until the 20th of this month. Check out some of the other posts and enter the giveaway to win the three books below. All links are included in my post.

Creature Features Celebration: Book blogging There's a Book for That

And today, Saturday, I celebrate this wonderful week of book blogging here.

Next week we are away and so other than my Monday post which I will write in advance, I won’t be blogging. But I will be taking a little bit of time each day to connect with my online community of book passionate readers and teachers who share so much with me. Part of what I love about teaching is learning. And that I can always do!

This week, I want to celebrate visits. Time with those we haven’t seen in a while is precious.

Our very good friends are here from Toronto. They have brought their charming dogs who we also love. Two friends and one dog we welcomed back and one little dog (new to them) we were thrilled to meet. Over the last week, we have had lots of time for walks and talks, dinners, parks and snuggles. As it should be 🙂 My children loved it all, especially the dog bonding!

An early end to the school year (teacher strike) means I haven’t seen my students in three weeks. I arranged to go visit at a park near the community center where many of our students attend summer programming. My daughter was eager to come along. She played cards, skipped rope and built in the sand with some of the kids. I brought along some picture books and had a read aloud session in the shade. So wonderful to see all of the smiles, collect a few hugs and check in with everyone.

Visits quell the missing. They remind us of what and who is important. They lighten our step. Hurrah for little visits!

Celebration: Standing on the Sidewalk

So . . . B.C. teachers are still on strike. I shared details here last week. The Tyee (local online paper) has an updated comprehensive time line of what has been happening in teacher bargaining written by Katie Hyslop for anyone wondering how we are possibly still without a contract: Everything You Need to Know about BC Teacher Bargaining

What is possible to celebrate you might wonder? There has been a lot of time standing on the sidewalk outside of our school to ponder just that.

As I was thinking about what to write for this post, I started looking through photographs I had taken over the week. This photograph of a colleague’s daughter crouched next to a chalk image my daughter had written (kid and teacher connected in hearts) stood out to me. This. This is what speaks to me.

I celebrate that I am a teacher. Somehow, someway we have got to get back into our building in the fall and again connect our days to working with our students.

Standing on the sidewalk. Standing up for well funded, well respected public education. This time has just made the resolve stronger. We need to be working with kids.

Celebration: Standing on the Sidewalk There's a Book for That

I am celebrating that I love my job. Passionately. Not being able to do it has been so difficult. I celebrate that I look forward to so many things that represent the magic of the classroom.

The buzz of a room full of children completely engrossed in books.

Community walks and little voices that wonder and observe and notice everything.

The beaming smile of pride that happens when a child grasps “the how” of something new.

Gratitude circles where the room becomes lighter with each gratitude statement shared.

Finding one student supporting another with a task. Because that’s what we do in our classroom community.

Students standing in front of an art display we have created giving each other compliments.

Exhaustion and quiet smiles on the bus ride home from an inspirational field trip.

The noises of a read aloud. Quiet. Hush. Outrage. Upset. Celebration. Wonder. Joy.

Questions. Questions. And more questions. Discovering all of the answers together.

I celebrate that somehow there will be a resolution and these things will happen again in my classroom with the students I should be teaching.

When you stand on the sidewalk outside of where you really want to be, much becomes clear.
