It’s Nonfiction Picture Book Wednesday!
This is the final list (3 of 3) where I share thirty titles (ten at a time) of my favourite nonfiction books for older readers. The first ten are here and second ten are here.
Even though I teach primary students, I often come across fantastic nonfiction titles that older students (Grades 4-8) might enjoy. Hope some of these titles are ideal for a reader you know.
The final ten:
Tracking Trash Flotsam, Jetsam and the Science of Ocean Motion by Loree Griffin Burns (published 2007)
Island: A Story of the Galapagos by Jason Chin (published 2012)
Electrical Wizard: How Nikola Tesla Lit up the World written by Elizabeth Rusch and illustrated by Oliver Dominguez (published 2013)
Birds of a Feather written by Francesco Pittau and illustrated by Bernadette Gervais (published 2012)
Just a Second by Steve Jenkins (published 2011)
Dave the Potter: Artist, Poet, Slave written by Laban Carrick Hill and illustrated by Bryan Collier (published 2010)
A River of Words: The Story of William Carlos Williams written by Jen Bryant and illustrated by Melissa Sweet (published 2008)
The Journey: Stories of Migration written by Cynthia Rylant and illustrated by Lambert Davis (published 2006)
The Tree Lady by H. Joseph Hopkins and illustrated by Jill McElmurry (published 2013)
Eruption: Volcanoes and the Science of Saving Lives written by Elizabeth Rusch with photographs by Tom Uhlman (published 2013)
Thanks to Alyson from Kid Lit Frenzy for the inspiration to read and share more nonfiction picture books in 2014. Follow the link to Alyson’s blog to read about more nonfiction books you need to read!
My goal is to read 65 nonfiction picture books for 2014. Progress: 104/65 complete!
Such WONDERFUL titles! I know and love all of them except Electrical Wizard and The Journey (how did I miss that one? That’s my OLW of the year!). I will be putting those two titles on my TBR list!
So glad that you discovered a few new to you titles Holly! It has been a pleasure to share some of my favourites.
Thanks for sharing this great list with your readers! There are quite a few books here that I know my son will enjoy a lot. I was recommended a book, that I would also like to share with you called “Watson’s Way” by author Joel Lund (http://bit.ly/WatsonsWay). My son and I read this book together every night for a couple weeks and it really changed his outlook (and mine) on a lot of things. The author uses his family dog to teach life lessons such as how to be a more patient person, and how to better get a long with others. There is something so pure about learning these things from an innocent animal and my son really seemed to enjoy it. There is even a place in the book for kids to write in a journal if they want to! This book focuses on many subjects that can be issues for children, tweens and adults alike and shows us how to better deal with these subjects. I would like to give it my full endorsement
Many here to love, Carrie. I hope I’ll be able to find Eruption. Timely now! Thanks for all the work you’ve put into these lists-terrific source!
I am so glad if this can be a source of ideas for those searching for some titles for older readers. Fun to share some of my favourites!
These lists are a wonderful resource! I’ve purchased several of these for my son’s classroom library. Now I just have to get myself into his classroom to book talk them!
Yes, it is both things that matter – access and promotion!
Hi Carrie,
We absolutely love A Tree Lady and Tracking Trash. Thanks for telling us about A River of Words. William Carlos Williams is one of our favorite poets and we can’t read to read a book about him
It’s a really great one! Enjoy!
I just checked our online library database, dear Carrie. We have Electrical Wizard! It’s perfect for our upcoming reading theme. Will borrow it tomorrow from the library. Thank you so much for sharing a series of your favourite Nonfiction titles. 🙂
Always a pleasure Myra. I have a bit of a love affair going with nonfiction right now.
